SustainU Announces Sustainability Commitment at Clinton Global Initiative University

oneSHIRT National Collegiate Clothing Drive to Expand Reach and Impact

March 31, 2011 – Morgantown, West Virginia – SustainU, a leading producer of apparel using 100 percent recycled fabrics that are manufactured in the United States, will be announcing a formal commitment to expand its oneSHIRT National Collegiate Clothing Drive at the Clinton Global Initiative University (CGIU) on April 2 at the University of California at San Diego. The initiative is a national drive to collect used clothing to be reused or recycled. The company partners with universities and colleges to organize and recruit thousands of campus volunteers to head into their communities to inform residents and businesses about the drive, and encourage them to gather any used, unwanted clothing for donation.

SustainU is the first company to participate at CGIU and make a formal commitment to create and expand a sustainability-related initiative that supports the goals and objectives of the organization. In 2011, the company’s oneSHIRT initiative mobilized 1,300 student volunteers from more than 90 universities and colleges across the country to collect and repurpose used clothing.

“CGIU’s commitment to getting young people involved in global sustainability and social-related issues is a cornerstone of enacting change,” says Chris Yura, CEO of SustainU. “Having a platform for all of these creative minds to share ideas is something in which everyone can benefit.”

In 2009, the oneSHIRT initiative collected approximately 1.5 tons of clothing, and earlier this year, 16 tons were gathered; in the future, the initiative is expected to continue growing. Each American, on average, throws away 86 pounds of clothing every year, which translates into an estimated 5.2 percent of the total municipal waste in landfills today.

“There are a lot of simple ways for people to make minor changes in their everyday lives that can end up making a huge difference. We at SustainU are excited to have a seat at this meeting and look forward everything CGIU has to offer,” said Yura.
