VF Corporation parent company of the Wrangler brand, is buying outdoor apparel company Timberland for $2 billion. New Hampshire-based Timberland is a long-time sustainability leader in the apparel industry. This year the company ranked second out of 150 companies evaluated by the nonprofit group Climate Counts. The recognition was despite the fact that the company fell short of its ambitious goal to cut absolute emissions 50% in all the facilities it owns and operates and for employee air travel. In 2009, Timberland made headlines by introducing its first recyclable footwear-a boot that was designed to be disassembled and recycled, rather than discarded, at the end of its product life. And it was the first company to post the carbon footprint of the shoes it sells right on the box.
