National Collegiate Clothing Drive Kicked Off

February 17, 2011 – Morgantown, West Virginia – SustainU, a leading producer of university related apparel using fabrics made from 100 percent recycled materials that are manufactured in the USA, today announced the launch of its “oneSHIRT” initiative, a national drive to collect used clothing to be reused or recycled. The company has partnered with over 110 universities and colleges to organize and recruit thousands of campus volunteers who will head into their communities on Monday, February 21 to inform residents and businesses about the drive, and encourage them to gather any used, unwanted clothing for pick up on Wednesday, February 23.

“Most people don’t realize that approximately 68 pounds of clothing per person is thrown away in the United States every year,” states Chris Yura, founder and CEO of SustainU. “That amounts to about 10 percent of all the waste in landfills today. Through the oneSHIRT drive, we’re hoping to collect over 120 tons – about 240,000 pounds – of clothing that would otherwise end up in the trash.”

Students from schools throughout the country such as UCLA, Marshall University, West Virginia University, North Carolina State University, Boston College, Florida International University, and Trinity University have embraced the clothing drive and its message.

“At the University of Houston, our One Shirt volunteers are eager to make a difference when it comes to the environment,” said Kate Gaviola, a member of the University of Houston’s Student Government Association who is leading the initiative at the school. “We’re excited to see how many clothes we can collect. I think once we educate people that they really can recycle their clothes, they’ll be more conscious about throwing them away.”

SustainU is at the forefront of creating clothing from recycled materials. The fabric used in its apparel is produced from post-consumer plastic bottles, recycled cotton and post-industrial textile waste.

“By using high quality recycled fabrics that have been made in the USA, we believe we can have a positive impact on the environment and contribute to the economic development of the textile manufacturing industry,” continues Yura. “By changing the way we think about clothes, we can change the world.”
